INERT German 1kg B1E Incendiary bomb.

The standard German 1kg incendiary bomb dropped on the UK in profusion and the baine of the Civil Defence services. Filled with thermite and made from electron magnesium and intiated by an impact fuze, the I.B. burnt with a fierce heat and intense white light.
This particular example has recently been purchased from the original ( now 91 years old ) finder who picked this IB from his garden in Loampit Hill, Lewisham in 1940. Recently recovered from the garage and totally uncleaned, the body is oxidised making it impossible to unscrew the body by hand and is probably why the tail has been detached to enable inspection from the top. However, from the marks to the top screw this has also failed and a hole has been drilled to confirm the status which is inert. The removable fins retain approx 95% of their original finish including the silver overspray from when the bomb was originally painted. They also retain the ink inspection marks. The bomb body retains a good proportion of it’s silver finish but the oxidisation has resulted in loss and makes the stamped manufacturer details a little difficult to decipher although clearly apparent. The same applies to the nose markings. Also you can see ‘ stress ‘ marks incurred on coming to earth. It is exactly in the condition in which it came from the garage complete with moderate corrosion and dirt and has not been cleaned in any way. A rare survivor with provenance.
