General Post Office Helmet.
The Post Office with it's responsibility for the telephone services was very much an integral part of the civil defence services. As such it enjoyed issues of helmets, service respirators etc for staff in exchanges, engineers, linesman etc. This example, a mild steel MkII No.2C, indicated by the three holes to the rim, is typical of the type issued to switchboard operators. Original factory grey finish with stencilled ' GPO ' in white which has then been over lacquered. Manufactured in 1941 by Joseph Sankey & Sons Ltd., Bilston with a size 7, 1941 dated, MkII liner by Failsworth Hats. Good, used condition with some minor light pitting to reverse and the usual abrasions etc. Liner dry with some damage.
