Uncommon and desirable Gas Mask Handbag. As it became apparent that the gas mask was to be constant companion during the early part of the war ways were found to enable the mask to be carried in more stylish ways than the cardboard box in which it was supplied. One of the fashionable styles was in the form of a handbag with a box container for the mask as an integral part of the design. This example, in black faux leather has a lined bag with a flap closed by a snap. This flap forms part of a larger closure enclosing the gas mask box in which is contained a 1939, Medium size, civilian gas mask by Avon. This example does have a few condition issues, a missing snap fastening to the bag compartment, minor cracking to finish to the sides and collapse of the card liner to the mask compartment. All of these issues can be easily remedied with a little tlc if so desired. Difficult and expensive to obtain, but priced to accommodate it's condition.
