Gas Mask Banding Machine.
A.R.P. machine for fitting the large rubber, retaining band in place on civilian Gas Masks. Made by Buss & Elston in 1938, whose impressed mark appears on the side, the machine works by placing a Civilian Gas Mask filter face down in the six open claws of the machine with the large rubber band on the outside. The gas mask is then fitted over the filter and the large handle raised to take the pressure off the retaining band which can then be slid into place. Lowering the lever releases the filter and the complete mask can be lifted out. In good, working order, handle screws off. Heavy item.
