British Restaurant Token.
British Restaurants were communal kitchens created in 1940 to help people who had been bombed out of their homes, had run out of ration coupons or otherwise needed help.Originally called 'Community Feeding Centres' they were set up as a not for profit organisation with the aim of selling a complete meal for no more than 9d. In 1943, 2,160 British Restaurants served 600,000 very inexpensive meals a day. They were disbanded in 1947. The tokens were used as a form of payment and this example is a generic type, not specifically tied to a particular area. In excellent, clean condition and uncommon.
