London ' S ' Zone Home Guard Helmet.

A MkII Helmet marked to one side ' H.G. S Zone L.D ' stencilled in red and yellow paint. London ' S Zone ' was the area to the North from Hampstead to Elstree, most of which fell under the administrative auspices of the Middlesex TAA. Whilst the 24th Middlesex Battalion HG wore an ' S ' as part of their unit designations it is difficult to ascertain who specifically wore these marked helmets possibly being sported by unattached members of the Zone staff.
This example made by Briggs Motor Bodies whose stamped marking can be found faintly impressed to rim. MkI, 1939 dated liner by Vero, size 6 1/2. A name ' J.L. ( ? ) Snape ' has been scratched to rim, missing chinstrap. The helmet has very much the feel of a shed or garage find with some surface corrosion with approx 55% original paint remaining with the liner in dry but stable and supple condition. The ' S ' zone markings are however, clear and distinct.
