Cinderella Rifles - Malcolm Atkin.
2025 1st ed. Cinderella Rifles: the .22 rifle in Home Guard and Auxiliary Units service.' The first detailed history of the .22 rifle in Home Guard and Auxiliary Units service. The title ‘Cinderella Rifles’ comes from the comment of a wartime shooting pundit who decried the lack of interest of the War Office in the potential value of the .22 rifle to the Home Guard. Starved of both rifles and ammunition from official sources, the Home Guard consequently formed a symbiotic relationship with the Society of Miniature Rifle Clubs and the .22 rifle became a key element in the social life of the volunteers. A curious anomaly is the official issue of silenced .22 rifles to the Auxiliary Units in 1942. Although this has become a cornerstone in their post-war legend as deadly assassins, in reality the issue was primarily an effort to bolster the morale of the men at a time when their special status was under increasing threat. In particular, one chapter is devoted to the mythology surrounding the Winchester Model 74 . Important and useful study of this under researched of Home Guard armament.
