Home Guard 3" HE Smith Gun Drill Projectile.

Cast iron 3" HE round for the smoothbore Smith Gun. This example is a drill example, originally white painted with two red bands and six holes drilled to the top of the body. No.247 AllWays fuse to the top of the body ( a fuse common to the No.69, 77 and Gammon bombs ) with a threaded pocket to the base to allow a sheet steel cordite filled cartridge with percussion cap to be screwed on to act as propellant. Particularly heavy - 8lb or 3.6kg in weight. This a particularly scarce piece of ordnance ( I have had four examples in 40+ years ) and has been range recovered retaining some 35% of it's original finish with some corrosion to body and fuze mounting.
The Smith Gun was invented by the chief engineer of the Trianco Engineering Company. It was developed as a private venture in 1940 and offered to the British Army as an emergency gun for issue to the Home Guard. The gun and limber/ammunition trailer could be towed behind an ordinary car, the gun was simply turned over onto one of its wheels to become ready for action.
