German SD2B ' Butterfly Bomb '. - Home Guard Souvenir/Training Aid.
An example of the infamous ' Butterfly Bomb ' that was dropped over the UK in profusion from 1941. Packed into containers which opened at height, the SD2s were armed as the hinged, spring loaded wings opened and rotated relative to the bomb body. The bomb either exploded on impact, after a delay or when disturbed.
This example is the SD2B model containing a 41 fuze - airburst or impact which has manufacturer's markings and an inspection mark. The Butterfly arming wings are all intact and one has residual manufacturer's markings and a date 43?l. Springs are only partially functional and the whole bomb appears to have been repainted. A partial old paper label is applied to the bomb body which appears to read ' Butterfly ????? bomb H.G. Sector 21 ?? 194???. ' Whether this example was refinished by a member of the Home Guard for training purposes or to form a part of a later exhibition I can only speculate, however, in lieu of it's deficiencies refinished state etc it is priced accordingly and at a considerably cheaper price than would normally be expected for such a scarce piece of Luftwaffe air-dropped ordnance.
