Chrome and enamel lapel badge for a stretcher bearer in the Emergency Hospital Scheme. The EHS was in an essence an early form of nationalisation of the hospital system undertaken to deal with the expected large number of air raid casualties. Anticipating an equally large demand for staff such as stretcher bearers, volunteers, largely men were enrolled and late in 1940 were authorised to the wear this badge . This example in excellent condition with horseshoe lapel fitting to the reverse with the manufacturer marks for H.W Millers.
